Where To Go In Greece In October For Swimming: Top 7 Places
Sea temperatures and weather can vary across Greece, so don’t assume every destination will provide you with the same experience in October.
If you have started your research, you probably have seen plenty of visitors saying Greece shuts down this time of year.
Even though you will see them wrapping up for the tourist season and things like ferry services reducing, don’t let this put you off.
To help you have the best time, I have hand-selected beaches and Islands where this is limited.
These are the 7 destinations across Greece where swimming conditions are great, even in October:
1. Crete

- ☀️ Oct Average Weather: 23°C to 25°C (73°F to 77°F) – 17°C to 19°C (63°F to 66°F)
- 🌊 Best Beach For Swimming: Agios Nikolaos Beach
- 📍Where To Stay: Hotel Port 7- Boutique Collection ( it’s 100 meters from the beach!)
- 📸Best Activity To Do: Balos & Falassarna Beach – Jeep Tour with Loungers and Lunch
Crete shines as one of the top destinations for swimming in Greece during October thanks to its lingering warmth and stunning coastline.
With sea temperatures typically hovering around 22-24°C (72-75°F), the island offers ideal conditions for enjoying its crystal-clear waters and golden beaches.
From the vibrant beaches of Elafonissi and Balos to the secluded coves of Preveli, Crete has some of the best beaches in Greece.
My favourite one is Paleochora Beach because it never seems crowded and has the bluest waters 😍
Plus, with fewer crowds post-summer, October provides a peaceful atmosphere to soak up the sun and dip in the inviting Mediterranean Sea.

- 📍Where To Stay: Mitsis Family Village Beach Hotel (this is where I stayed)
- 📸Best Activity To Do: Full-Day Sailing with Meal, Drinks, & Swim Experience
The stunning Island of Kos is a great Greek destination to visit during the autumn/fall months because it belongs to the Dodecanese island group which tends to get the best weather.
It also helps that you can easily reach the Island too!
Kos maintains sea temperatures around 22-24°C (72-75°F), making it perfect for a refreshing dip or leisurely beach day.
With fewer tourists, you can enjoy the island’s pristine beaches, like Paradise Beach and Mastichari Beach.

Santorini isn’t usually a Greek island I recommend.
Yes, it has some of the best Greek road trips but it has become so overpriced and crowded!
However, Santorini remains a top destination for swimming in Greece during October, thanks to its mild temperatures and stunning coastal scenery.
The island’s volcanic black sands and hidden coves make it a standout choice for autumnal seaside escapes!
Despite the onset of autumn, the island’s waters maintain a comfortable temperature of around 22-24°C (72-75°F).
With fewer crowds post-summer, October is the best time to visit Santorini’s iconic beaches, like Red Beach and Kamari Beach.

Corfu also boasts a diverse coastline which I highly recommend booking a boat tour to see 😍
What I love about the Corfu beach scene is that it’s not all the same, every corner of the Island has something different.
There are not only sandy beaches like Glyfada and Paleokastritsa, but rocky coves and hidden bays to explore as well.

👉 INSIDER TIP: Even though the waters look clear, don’t drink the tap water in Corfu. It tastes unpleasant and can make you seriously sick.

October in Greece offers a unique experience, despite it being outside the peak tourist season.

Cheaper travel rates and fewer crowds to contend with will make your visit a lot easier ✅
You’ll find the weather still pleasantly warm, perfect for wandering through ancient ruins or soaking up the sun on a picturesque Greek island.
Just don’t forget to pack a light jumper for the cooler evenings.
Plus, with fewer tourists around, you’ll have more space to appreciate the beauty of this Mediterranean gem at your own pace.
So, if you’re looking for a more laid-back and budget-friendly Greek adventure, October might just be the ideal time for you to go.
What Is The Weather In Greece In October?
While it might be transitioning towards the cooler side, October still boasts some pretty pleasant temperatures across the country.
Across the country, temperatures typically range from around 18°C to 24°C (64°F to 75°F).
Picture sunny days with temperatures hovering around the mid-70s Fahrenheit (low 20s Celsius) in places like Athens and the mainland.
If you are visiting Athens for a city break, packing a light jumper or coat for the evenings is key!
If you’re aiming for the best weather, consider booking your getaway to destinations like Crete and Kos.
You will be able to get some bargains when it comes to flights and accommodation and you can still enjoy the beaches.
These islands in the autumn also tend to hold onto the warmth a little longer!
While the days are still relatively warm, especially in southern regions and islands, evenings can be cooler, so it’s a good idea to pack layers.
Tips For Swimming In Greece In October
If you are wondering “Where can you swim in Greece in October?”, spending time in the waters will make up a huge amount of your trip.
For the best trip, keeping safe and happy is key.
These are some tips that I have always found useful when swimming in Greece during October:
- Check the Weather: While October generally offers pleasant swimming conditions, it’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast before heading to the beach to ensure you’ll have sunny skies and calm seas.
- Choose Your Locations Wisely: Opt for beaches on islands or coastal regions known for maintaining warmer temperatures, such as Crete, Rhodes, or Kos. These destinations typically offer more favourable conditions for swimming in October.
- Bring Appropriate Gear: Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit, sunscreen, and a beach towel. The sun can still be strong in October, so protecting your skin is essential.
- Pack Lunch & Water: Many hidden beaches don’t have facilities so make sure you bring a picnic.
- Enjoy Off-Peak Hours: With fewer tourists around, take advantage of the quieter beaches and enjoy the serenity of the sea in the late mornings or early afternoons.
- Be Mindful of Safety: Even though the weather is still pleasant, always swim in designated areas and be aware of any potential hazards, such as strong currents or rocky shores.
