The best way to reach the island is by flying into Kos International Airport by ferry.

Where Is Kos In Greece?
Kos is a Greek island located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, part of the Dodecanese island group.
It lies close to the southwestern coast of Turkey, about 24 kilometres (30-minute ferry) from the Turkish port of Bodrum.
It is also one of the best Greek Islands to visit in the colder months because you can still swim here!
How To Get To Kos
There are a few ways to get here, depending on your starting point. However, you only really have two options. You can either get here by plane or by boat.
By Air:
The most common way to reach Kos is by flying into the International Airport, also known as “Hippocrates” Airport (IATA code: KGS).
This is how I get to the Island if I’m departing from The UK!
Many airlines offer direct flights from various European cities throughout the year.
Once you land, you can easily take a taxi or bus from the airport to your destination on the island.
By Ferry:
If you’re coming from other Greek islands or the mainland, you can take a ferry to Kos.
There are regular ferry services connecting Kos to other islands in the Dodecanese group, such as Rhodes, Kalymnos, and Patmos, as well as to ports on the mainland, such as Piraeus (the port of Athens).
Additionally, international ferry routes connect the island to Bodrum and other Turkish ports.
By Cruise Ship:
Many cruise ships include this spot in their itineraries, particularly those sailing in the eastern Mediterranean.
If you’re visiting as part of a cruise, your ship will dock at the port of Kos Town, and you can explore the island from there.
How To Travel To Kos From Turkey
The most popular option is taking the ferry, which only takes about 30 minutes from Bodrum.
You can either buy your ferry tickets at the terminal or book them online.
You will be looking to pay around 35 Euros per person (it’s cheaper if you book in advance).
You can also book a day trip that covers all your fees and transport, making it super convenient if you’re short on time or prefer a guided experience.
Getting To Kos From Athens
If you’re in Athens and dreaming of sandy beaches and ancient ruins, getting to the Island is no problem. These are the best options to get there:
- Fly (takes around an hour)
- Ferry (takes 9-16 hours depending on provider)
The easiest way is to catch a flight from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to Kos International Airport (Hippocrates). Several airlines offer direct flights, and the journey takes about an hour.
The ferry ride takes longer, usually around 9-16 hours, but it’s a great option to enjoy the sea views.
Plus, ferry travel allows you to bring along more luggage without worrying about weight restrictions.
The Best Ways To Get Around Kos
I love getting around by car, it’s one of the best road trips to do in Greece. However, it isn’t for everyone and is not the only way to explore the Island:

Unfortunately, you don’t have a million options for reaching this part of Greece. You have either a plane or a ferry.
