You can do some epic road trips throughout Greece and Kos is no exception. There are so many hidden sites and beaches that unfortunately you will struggle to reach without a car.
Having a rental car also provides you with so much more flexibility and convenience, especially if you want to explore remote areas or off-the-beaten-track attractions that may not be easily accessible by public transport.
Not only does it save you money on airport transfers but it also allows you to set your own schedule and not have to rely on anyone else!

When Shouldn’t You Hire A Car?
Driving on holiday isn’t for everyone. I get it, this is the time to sit back and relax so why not have someone drive you around?
I do think it’s a good idea to explore Kos by car but it isn’t necessary to have a good time here.
If you’re only planning to stay in one area or resort then getting around by walking, taxi, bus or a private transfer makes more sense. There is no Uber here so options are kinda limited. Also, if you are only on the Island for a few hours, you will not be able to make the most of your hire car.
For those planning to stay in Kos Town, you will be happy to know that the transport links are epic. So if you are only planning on doing a few day trips, it may be less stressful and cheaper to use public transport.
How Much Does A Car Rental In Kos Cost?
Prices will vary depending on the time of year, vehicle type and how long you have the car.
I have rented a car for one day in Kos and it cost me €30. I have also rented a car for a week and the daily cost on average worked out around the same. This has also been the average cost on the other Greek Islands I have visited too!

There are so many car rental companies in Kos that you won’t be short on options. However, never overlook reading real and up-to-date reviews. This has saved me from using awful companies so many times!

How To Get Around Kos Without A Car
Kos has a relatively well-developed public transportation system, including buses and taxis. If the places you plan to visit are easily accessible by public transport, you will have no issues without a car. If visiting more remote spots on the Island is what you want, I’d recommend booking private transport for the day.

9 Things You Should Know Before Renting A Car In Kos
Renting a car in Kos, like renting a car anywhere else, needs a bit of planning to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.
I have never had a problem when hiring a car in Greece but it’s always good to be prepared.
Here are some things you should know before booking your hire car:
1. Driving Requirements:
Check the minimum age requirement for renting a car in Kos. In most places, the minimum age is 21, and there might be additional fees for drivers under 25.
Also, make sure you bring a valid driver’s license. An international driving permit (IDP) might be required, depending on your country of origin.
2. Insurance Coverage:
Verify the insurance coverage provided by the rental company. Basic insurance often includes collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection, but there might be deductibles.
Consider purchasing additional insurance for comprehensive coverage, especially if you plan to drive in remote or challenging terrains. I also add this on as an extra with Discover Cars because it works out to be around €5 a day.
3. Booking in Advance:
It’s usually cheap to book your rental car in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. This guarantees availability and usually leads to better rates.
4. Car Type and Size:
Choose a car that suits your needs. Consider the number of passengers, luggage space, and the routes you’ll be driving on.
Places like Zia are more mountainous so the roads are not always in the best condition. The roads can be windy, full of pot holes and have small stones that easily hit your car. However, I do recommend staying or at least visiting here because the views are stunning!
Automatic transmission cars may be less common and more expensive than manual transmission in some locations so keep this in mind if you want to save money.
5. Fuel Policy:
Read the fuel policy of the rental company. Some companies provide a full tank and expect you to return the car with a full tank, while others may charge you for a full tank of fuel upon pickup.
6. Rental Duration and Return Policy:
Be aware of the rental duration and return policies. Some of the companies may not allow you to take them on the ferry to other islands. Late returns could result in additional charges so make sure you book it for the exact amount of time you need it for.
Make sure you also check if there are any penalties for early returns- this is rare but can happen!
7. Road Rules and Regulations:
Familiarize yourself with the local driving rules and regulations in Greece, including speed limits, road signs, and parking rules.
Even though this destination has a laid-back vibe, there are pretty hot driving laws. There are some areas where a lot of accidents happen because of poor driving so they monitor you closely.
And even though it’s a beach destination, it’s illegal to wear flip-flops when driving!
8. Condition of the Car:
Before accepting the car, inspect it thoroughly for any existing damage. Ensure that any pre-existing damage is documented by the rental company to avoid being charged for it upon return.
I always film around the car just in case anything is picked up later. This is also something a few people forget to do but take a photo of the mileage before you set off.

Clarify the payment methods accepted by the rental company. This has never happened to me in Greece but when renting a car in Gran Canaria my friend had an awful experience where the rental company wanted to charge her more for her payment method.
I always make sure I use a credit card when hiring a car because they don’t take the deposit out of your account.
Also, don’t forget to ask about any additional fees, such as airport surcharges, one-way fees, or fees for additional drivers.
