Can You Swim In Malta During The Spring Months (Including May)?

Absolutely. The Mediterranean waters are getting warmer and warmer by the day in May so this is when you will see more people taking to its waters.
Saying that, Malta has great year-round weather so you can even swim in the sea here during December!
One of the things I love most about swimming in Malta is how clear the waters are. There are so many epic spots to explore the marine life so it never feels overcrowded.
This time of year the weather can be a bit more temperamental so before you visit the beach, check Malta’s live cameras. Swimming is impossible in parts of the Island when the winds are high, I found this out on my last May trip here 🙃
If you want the weather to be more predictable and the sea temperatures to be warmer, you are better off booking your trip here towards the end of the month.
But if you are like me and want to swim on holiday no matter what, stay somewhere with a heated pool!
The Best Hotel is the be.HOTEL because you can use its heated pool all year round! 🤩
Is The Sea Warm In Malta In May?
In May, the sea temperature in Malta is generally pleasant and warming up after the cooler winter months. The waters here are also pretty safe!
The average sea temperature during May in Malta typically ranges from around 18 to 21 degrees Celsius (64 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit).
While this may not be as warm as the peak summer months, it is still comfortable for swimming and water activities!
Keep in mind that individual preferences for water temperature can vary but many visitors like myself find May to be a good time to enjoy the sea in Malta without it being too cold.
It’s also a great time to venture into other waters like Sicily if you fancy a day trip!
If you are concerned about the waters being too cold, try venturing into them around mid-day. This is when the sun is at its peak so I was super grateful for the cooler waters!
Where Should You Go Swimming In Malta In May?

The most popular place visitors go swimming when visiting Malta during May is The Blue Lagoon on the Island of Comino.
It has shallow areas so it warms up quicker than other bodies of water around these Islands. Even if you don’t fancy swimming, it is one of the best things to do when visiting Malta so I highly suggest booking a trip here.
It makes swimming here so much easier as some tours even provide you with swim gear and drinks!
I Recommend You Book THIS Private Boat Tour If You Are Exploring In A Group Or Want A Private Swimming Experience! 😍
Malta is blessed with naturally stunning beaches so you will find some incredible places to swim. These are some of the best places I swam and that you should consider visiting during your trip:
- St George’s Bay in St Julians
- Meliaha Bay
- Paradise Bay (This is my favourite place to swim because the waters are so clear)
- Ramla Bay
- Peters Pool near Marsaxlokk
- Wied il-Għasri in Gozo (My all-time favourite place in Gozo so make sure you visit here, even just for a day trip!)
What Do I Need To Pack For Visiting Malta’s Swimming Spots?

It is worth knowing that if you book a boat trip here, many of them actually include things like SUP boards, snorkels and drinks which will make your day of swimming much more enjoyable!
Whether you decide to book a boat trip or not, these are things you should make sure you pack:
✅ Tiger Balm– Helps with any bites or minor cuts
✅ Full Face Snorkel– Makes swimming so much easier compared to a traditional one
✅ Anti-Theft Beach Bag– this helped me swim worry-free!
✅ Beach Shoes– not all of Malta’s Beaches are sandy
Can You Swim In Malta In May? Final Thoughts
Even though the waters are not at their warmest, you can absolutely swim in Malta, Gozo and Comino during your visit!
From Paradise Bay to The Blue Lagoon, your trip will be full of epic places to explore. Even if the conditions are not the best for swimming during your getaway, these spots are amazing for the views alone.
What I love about Malta is the amount of hidden coves and beaches that are dotted around the Island. To avoid the crowds and to make the most of these swim spots, it’s worth hiring a car.
To make the most out of swimming here throughout May, you should book your trip towards the end of the month when the temperatures are getting hotter!
